A Fresh Air Unit (FAU), also known as a Fresh Air Handling Unit (FAHU), is a critical component in HVAC systems designed to intake 100% outdoor air, filter it, and thermally condition it (heating, cooling, humidifying, or dehumidifying) before distributing it into indoor spaces. Unlike standard Air Handling Units (AHUs) that primarily recirculate indoor air, the FAU focuses on introducing clean, oxygen-rich fresh air to dilute indoor pollutants, control humidity, and ensure compliance with ventilation standards. It typically consists of components such as air filters, cooling/heating coils, fans, dampers, and optionally energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) or heat recovery wheels to improve energy efficiency.
