There are many systems and components in a home or building that we take for granted, such as roofs, pipes, and electricity. Perhaps the most underrated system is HVAC: a huge heating and cooling system is driven by a micro thermostat.

What is HVAC?

HVAC is the acronym for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It refers to the system in a home or building that can produce safe, clean, and comfortable air in the space.

• Heating: The "H" in HVAC represents heating, which, as one might guess, can heat the air in the home. In general, this may involve heating a space with forced hot air from a furnace or radiant heat from a home boiler. In commercial buildings, heat may come from boilers, heat exchangers, and coils in air handlers.

• Ventilation: "V" in HVAC stands for ventilation, which is to change old and obsolete air and carbon monoxide into the fresh air to improve indoor air quality. Manual ventilation will involve opening doors and windows. Mechanical ventilation (in the case of HVAC) usually involves heating or air conditioning devices that draw fresh air into the system. The system purifies air through filters, regulates its temperature and humidity, and exchanges it with stale air.

• Air conditioning: As important as the other two components of HVAC, air conditioning is about comfort and humidity control. HVAC air conditioning components take warm, moist air from the space and cool it. At the same time, moisture in the air is removed to control humidity.

How does the HVAC system work?

All three HVAC components work together as a system, and different components perform certain functions.

In the case of a home HVAC system, there is usually a central heating device called a furnace. The stove has a supply side that pushes air to the entire home through pipes, and a return side that pulls indoor air back into the system. When the system draws in indoor air through the return flow, the air then passes through the furnace, through the heated coil, and then returns home through the blower.

The HVAC system also contains air conditioning, which is usually placed outside the home in the form of outdoor units. The air conditioning unit contains a compressor that condenses refrigerant gas into a liquid and then pumps it through a system called a plumbing device. The wire group travels to a coil in the existing home piping system to cool the moving air. The system still relies on the blower of the furnace to pull the air through the return vent and push it through the piping system.

In terms of ventilation, these systems work in several ways. Some have a simple set of shutters that the owner can open and close. Others may have advanced components called HRV (heat recovery ventilation) systems. These systems draw in fresh air while allowing the outgoing air to heat or cool the fresh air. In any case, ventilation is to improve indoor air quality.
